NEW YORK, NY, Jul 31 (MARKET WIRE) --
TheInfoPro (TIP), an independent research network and leading supplier of
market intelligence for the Information Technology (IT) industry, today
announced that VMware is entrenched as the lead virtualization provider
throughout the remainder of 2008. In addition, 49% of VMware customers
report that it would be hard to switch to another vendor because of the
time and money that has been invested not only in the product, but in the
tools and training as well.

"Enterprise organizations are currently expressing strong loyalty toward
VMware, and it continues to receive the highest customer ratings," says
Bob Gill, Managing Director of Server research for TheInfoPro. "However,
with future goals for virtualization increasing in complexity, in
addition to a still-untapped market for virtualizing production
applications, plus well-rated, credible alternatives recently being
introduced to the space, there is a strong possibility that VMware's
dominance will come under attack, despite current customer loyalty."
Additional key findings on the state of the virtualization market include:
-- Nearly 40% of respondents report that consolidating physical servers
for cost reduction is the key driver of virtualization in their enterprise,
while another 25% cited consolidating physical servers for reduction of the
data center footprint as key.
-- Forty percent (40%) of organizations interviewed report that today's
key goal for virtualization is reducing the number of currently existing
physical servers. However, the key goals cited for virtualization in 2010
are dynamic provisioning and disaster recovery.
-- Server decision-makers' greatest concern regarding server
virtualization continues to be performance under load. The majority of
them have yet to determine how performance will be affected by overhead of
virtualization software, in addition to the added load of sharing a
physical box with other applications.
-- Despite the large percentage of users planning and investigating
virtualization, the market is still very much untapped. Nearly 40% state
that less than 5% of their servers host virtualization today, but only 15%
report that less than 5% of all new servers in 2008 will host
virtualization. By 2010, 70% of organizations believe that over 50% of all
new servers deployed will host virtualization.
-- Virtualization software providers* cited as being in use or in plan
include: 4Base Technology, Avocent, Archstone Consulting, BMC Software,
Brocade, Chip PC, CiRBA, Citrix, Compellent, DirectAdmin, Enigmatec, HP,
IBM, Leostream, Lex Systems, Microsoft, NetApp, Novell, Parallels, PerfMan,
Red Hat, Sun, Symantec, TeamQuest, UltraBac, Vizioncore, VMware, and Wyse
Technology.
*Software providers being listed cover a variety of virtualization
technologies including: Virtualization movement and deployment utilities,
virtualization planning and configuration utilities, virtual machine
software for mid-tier / application servers, virtual machine software for
edge / web servers, desktop virtualization services and OS-based
virtualization services
