US STOCKS-Market opens lower on economic data

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened lower on Thursday after data showed the American economy grew less than expected in the second quarter and a jump in weekly jobless claims hinted at labor market weakness.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI was down 120.01 points, or 1.04 percent, at 11,463.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX was down 10.19 points, or 0.79 percent, at 1,274.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC was down 16.50 points, or 0.71 percent, at 2,313.22. (Reporting by Kristina Cooke; Editing by Jonathan Oatis)
