MILAN, July 31 (Reuters) - Italian scooter maker Piaggio (PIA.MI) turned in net profit of 47.3 million euros ($73.88 million) in the first half of 2008, down from 51.5 million a year ago, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Turnover fell 7 percent to 900.3 million euros from 968.6 million a year ago, partly hit by unfavourable exchange rates.

Piaggio said it had focused on improving efficiency, given "particularly difficult international markets".
