Security On Campus, Inc.'s National Campus Safety Awareness Month Receives
Congressional Support

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. House of Representatives
Thursday night unanimously approved a resolution, H. Res. 1288, supporting the
designation of September as National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM) by
Security On Campus, Inc. (SOC), a national non-profit organization based in
King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The resolution, sponsored by Congressman Joe
Sestak (PA-7) and a bi-partisan coalition of 50 co-sponsors, also recognizes
SOC's partnership with colleges and universities across the country to offer
campus safety programming each September as a part of NCSAM.
"We are very pleased to have such a strong showing of Congressional
support for our partnership with colleges across the country to offer
important campus safety programming," said Jonathan Kassa, SOC's Executive
Director. "It reinforces how important this work is to the American people,
and especially those with loved ones in campus communities."
"We are now more aware than ever about the importance of keeping our
nation's college students safe," said Congressman Sestak. "National Campus
Safety Awareness Month which comes at the beginning of the new school year,
offers a perfect opportunity to provide students with critical awareness that
they need to help stay safe on campus. Campuses, like any other community,
have to deal with crime and this awareness better equips every member of the
community to protect themselves and prevent crime."
NCSAM was first conceived by SOC in partnership with the Student
Government Association at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay in 2004 and
has continued growing each year. This year 350 schools from across the country
will be participating in formal NCSAM events.
Security On Campus, Inc. (SOC) was founded in 1987 by Jeanne Clery's
parents Connie & Howard after she was raped and murdered in her on-campus
residence hall at college, by a fellow student whom she didn't know. SOC
worked to secure passage of the Jeanne Clery Act, originally known as the
Campus Security Act, in 1990 and continues to be the nation's leading voice
for the improvement of campus safety. SOC is headquartered in King of Prussia,
Pennsylvania.
