COSTA MESA, CA, Aug 05 (MARKET WIRE) --
Grab your running, jogging or walking shoes, don some pink and join more
than 30,000 activists and survivors fighting to create a world without
breast cancer. The 2008 Komen Orange County Race for the Cure will take
place at Fashion Island in Newport Beach on Sunday, Sept. 28.
Marking its 17th year, the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure is one of
Southern California's largest fundraising events, raising more than $18
million in Orange County since its inception in 1991. This year's event is
under the direction of Race Chair Carla Cammack for the third year in a
row. Last year, the Race raised a record $3 million; the fundraising goal
for 2008 is to exceed last year's success.
"We are particularly appreciative this year for every Race participant,
volunteer and sponsor who is dedicated to helping us end breast cancer
forever -- I realize that people are choosing carefully where they invest
their time and resources," said Lisa Wolter, executive director of the
Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R). "The progress
we've made in breast cancer research and in our local breast health
screening and outreach would be impossible without the advocates who
realize that breast cancer is an urgent issue that won't wait."
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
With nearly 1,900 women in Orange County facing a diagnosis of breast
cancer this year, and many more already battling the disease, the Komen
Orange County Affiliate is at the forefront of ensuring that life-saving
breast health initiatives are accessible to all women in the community,
regardless of their age, race, language, sexual orientation or income
level.
Seventy-five percent of the funds raised are invested in local breast
cancer awareness and education programs, breast self-examination classes,
medical and diagnostic services for uninsured and underinsured women, and
other unmet community needs through grants to community breast health
organizations. The remaining 25 percent is dedicated to the Komen Award
and Research Grant Program to fund national breast cancer research.
"Every year I am inspired by the women and families that come together for
the Race -- they are survivors, family members of loved ones lost and
volunteers willing to help out in any way possible," said Cammack. "It
rejuvenates our cause and brings new hope to fulfilling the Komen promise
of bringing an end to breast cancer and the pain it causes so many people
in our community and the world."
Local Presenting Sponsors include The Allergan Foundation, Chevron, Extra
Mile, The Orange County Register, Ralphs and Food4Less. Platinum Sponsors
include ABC7, Coast Magazine, Pacific Life, Time Warner Cable, Yard House
Restaurants and Smart Levels Media. Numerous additional sponsors have
generously donated funds, products and services.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R)
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do
everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that
promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast
cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest
grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to
save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize
science to find the cures. Through events like the Race for the Cure(R),
nearly $1 billion has been invested to fulfill that promise, making Komen
for the Cure the world's largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to
fighting breast cancer.
