MOSCOW Aug 5 (Reuters) - Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov's Onexim Group may sell a 35 percent stake in gold miner Polyus (PLZL.MM) to a strategic partner should it acquire the stake as planned, an Onexim source told Reuters on Tuesday.

Onexim said earlier on Tuesday it had offered Prokhorov's ex-business partner Vladimir Potanin a 16.7 percent stake in miner Norilsk Nickel (GMKN.MM) for $6.5 billion in cash and a 35.2 percent stake in Polyus worth $3.5 billion.

Prokhorov already owns around 30 percent of Polyus, Russia's largest gold miner. (Reporting by Polina Devitt, writing by Aleksandras Budrys, editing by Robin Paxton)
