DENVER, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Sherry Comes, President and Founder of
CoffeeCakes.com, an Internet retailer of high-end baked goods and gifts, has
received the "Outstanding Women in Business" award from The Denver Business
Journal and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). The
winners were announced at an awards banquet held at the Denver Marriott City
Center Hotel on August 7.
This year's Outstanding Women in Business award recognized twelve
exceptional Denver business women who have made significant contributions to
both local business and the community. The winners were chosen based on their
demonstration of innovation, entrepreneurship, professional accomplishment,
and community leadership.
"I am honored and thankful to have been selected for this award," Comes
said. "My personal definition of success goes beyond business models and
profits -- it's measured by what I have done to encourage others and to help
in my community."
When reviewing Sherry's considerable achievements, consideration was made
to the fact that she is not only the President and Founder of CoffeeCakes.com,
but is also a full-time executive for IBM. At IBM, Sherry has earned the
rarely attained title of "Distinguished Engineer." At CoffeeCakes.com,
customers always come first, and the company has consistently won a "Five Star
Top Service Rating" since 1995.
CoffeeCakes.com donates a portion of its proceeds to finding a cure for a
potentially life-threatening but little-known genetic disorder called
Neurofibromatosis (NF). CoffeeCakes.com formed an alliance with NF Inc. (an
organization committed to supporting those affected by NF) and actress Gillian
Anderson (Agent Scully, The X-Files), a tireless spokesperson for the disease,
to facilitate the donation of company profits. CoffeeCakes.com also supports
the Children's Tumor Foundation, another organization associated with NF.
Sherry became active in NF advocacy when her adopted son Sebastian was
diagnosed with the disease in 2005. Sherry adopted Sebastian from Guatemala,
rescuing him from below primitive living conditions, already aware that he
probably carried the NF1 gene.
As well as its extensive support of NF, CoffeeCakes.com supports local
charities and fund-raisers including the "Empty Bowl" which supports victims
of domestic violence, cancer research, and heart disease prevention.
Sherry Comes received her award in the Jean Yancy Small Business Award
category.
