East Bay Youth Top the Charts With Climate-Change-Combating Artwork in
FutureSeaLevel.org's 'Turn the Tide' Creativity Competition

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Proving that Bay Area youth have
discovered the cure for the summertime blues, FutureSeaLevel.org today
announced the Grand Prize team, individual winner and runner-up of its "Turn
the Tide" creativity competition. Children from Pleasanton, Hayward and
Oakland came out on top in the competition, geared towards creatively
demonstrating what the effects of climate change on the Bay Area mean to them.
The team Grand Prize was awarded to youngsters from the Mohr Y Kids,
Tri-Valley YMCA in Pleasanton, who transformed their thoughts about climate
change into a "Turn the Tide" board game for the competition. The game
included spaces such as "You tell a friend about global warming: move forward
5 spaces" or "You don't recycle: lose a turn." The children gained
inspiration from a recent visit to Aquarium of the Bay.
Mohr Y Kids will receive a $1,000 donation to the nonprofit of their
choice from Aquarium of the Bay Foundation. They will also enjoy a hosted
party at Aquarium of the Bay and each child will receive a canvas bag and
Kleen Kanteen from San Francisco Department of the Environment and knowledge
cards donated by the Sierra Club.
Jenna Lowe, a science crazed nine-year-old from Hayward, won the
individual Grand Prize, with her drawing of the "before" and "after" effects
of climate change. Lowe created her award-winning entry while participating
in the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center's summer camp. For her winning
prize package, Lowe will receive a $500 donation to the nonprofit organization
of her choice from Aquarium of the Bay Foundation; a canvas bag and Kleen
Kanteen from San Francisco Department of the Environment; Knowledge cards and
a special pin from the Sierra Club; and a special Behind-the-Scenes tour for
nine friends at Aquarium of the Bay.
A runner-up team from Eden Area YMCA in Oakland was also selected for the
creation and performance of the Grammy-worthy song, "No more dry shoes." Each
group member will be awarded with special prize packages from Aquarium of the
Bay Foundation, Sierra Club and San Francisco Department of the Environment.
