PARK CITY, Utah--(Business Wire)--
After four days off due to injury, Backcountry.com athlete Karl
Meltzer is back on the run.

Meltzer, 40, began his attempt to break the Appalachian Trail
speed record (2,174 miles in less than 47 days 13 hours 31 minutes) on
Aug. 5, 2008 at Mt. Katahdin, ME. Despite heavy rains, flood-level
river crossings and wet trails through Maine, Meltzer maintained a
strong pace, reaching the New Hampshire border in 7 days 6 hours 14
minutes. He was on track to his goal.

On Day 14 of his trek, 538 miles in, Meltzer was sidelined with
tendonitis - a direct result of altering his running stride to
compensate for trench foot, which he developed in the wet conditions
of Maine.

Forced to take unplanned rest days, Meltzer fell behind schedule.
On the morning of Aug. 23, he set off again from his stopping point.
Since then, for the past three days, he has resumed speed-hiking,
averaging 40 miles and 12.7 hours per day, with brief crew-assisted
stops at designated road crossings along the way. That's 3.2 mph, just
off the 3.5-4 mph pace he kept before the injury. He is determined to
finish strong.

"The bottom line is, despite the difficulties, I am going to keep
going," said Meltzer. "I started this knowing that it was going to be
the hardest thing I've ever done, and that's exactly what it is. I'm
going to get to Georgia no matter what it takes. I'm going to keep
pushing myself, moving as fast as I can for as long as I can every day
until I get to Mt. Springer."

Meltzer is a world-class professional trail runner who has won 49
of the 92 ultra-marathons that he's started - including 23 100-mile
races. He holds the record for the most 100-mile wins in one year: six
in 2006.

Meltzer is supported by his crew and his sponsors:
Backcountry.com, Marmot, Moeben, SPOT, V.I.O., First Endurance, La
Sportiva and Nathan Packs.
