Bring your friends, dance shoes and love of food and wine to the
3rd Annual Sonoma County Salsa Dance Festival, an event that is
rapidly gaining popularity among dance and music enthusiasts.
This multi-cultural event offers a full day of activities.
Highlights include:
-- Multiple dance workshops by internationally renowned dance
instructors, 2-5 pm
-- Wine & food tasting from local vineyards and restaurants, 5-7
pm
-- Dance Gala with spectacular dance and music performances, 7
pm-1:30 am
-- Yucatan cuisine by Chef Mateo Granados and wine/beer are
available for purchase during Gala
-- Featured Salsa band from Los Angeles, Orquesta Tabaco y Ron
-- Silent auction, open to the public 2-10 pm
This year's Salsa band, Orquesta Tabaco y Ron is a 12 piece "Big
Band" orchestra, composed of musicians from all over Latin America
including Puerto Rico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia and
Mexico. Their stunning rhythms create a contagious energy that revives
the salsa sounds of generations past.
All proceeds from the festival will benefit the Buena Vista
Children's Foundation, a non-profit that impacts the lives of children
through the miracle of sight. The Foundation hosts an annual clinic
that provides free eye exams and glasses to underprivileged children
in Sonoma County. Considering that 80% of all learning in a child's
first 12 years comes through the eyes, good vision is important for
success in school.
"Most children do not complain about poor vision, because they
think that everyone must see the world the way they do, and
unfortunately go many years without the proper eyewear," said
co-founder of BVCF Dr. Antonio Moran, O.D. It is cases like these that
inspired Dr. Moran and his wife, Irene Silva, to get involved and make
a difference. As co-owners of Santa Rosa Salsa they searched for a way
to combine their love of Salsa music and dance and their commitment to
community service. They combined Dr. Moran's passion for optometry and
their love of Salsa music and dance. In 2007 they formed the Buena
Vista Children's Foundation, and made the festival a fundraising
event. They wanted to bring the music and culture of Salsa to Sonoma
County and at the same time impact the lives of children through the
miracle of sight.
Dr. Antonio Moran, O.D. and Irene Silva are children of Mexican
immigrants. Their parents came to the Napa and Sonoma Valleys in the
1950s to build a better life for their families. Fulfilling their
parents' commitment, Dr. Moran graduated from the prestigious UC
Berkeley School of Optometry and Irene Silva received a Bachelor of
Art degree in Economics with a minor in Communications from UC Davis.
Dr. Moran and his wife share those same values with their own family,
emphasizing as well the importance of commitment to education and to
their community.
