Herbert Smith Strikes Balance Between IT Security and Business Productivity
With Workshare
International law firm deploys Protect to reduce risk of information leakage

SAN FRANCISCO and LONDON, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Workshare, a global
leader in content protection and control, today announces that Herbert Smith,
a leading international law firm, has selected Workshare Protect to reduce the
risk of data leakage. Since Workshare integrates seamlessly with the firm's
existing Microsoft Office environment without using strict IT policies,
employees can carry out work as normally and maintain high levels of business
productivity and client service.
Workshare Protect enables Herbert Smith to manage the risk of data loss
associated with an increasing number of documents and emails being sent by
monitoring the flow of sensitive information contained in over 240 file
formats across the organization. The technology will apply user and usage
policies set by the firm to information to ensure that no documents sent
outside of the organization by email contain sensitive metadata. Workshare
Protect's intelligent word-based fingerprint technology will alert users to
potentially risky actions, blocks where appropriate and remove confidential
information before it is sent outside of the network.
The firm selected Protect because it could integrate seamlessly with
Microsoft Office, so that employees could quickly check documents for risks
without the need for extensive training. The firm was impressed with
Workshare's heritage in document control and the deployment was a natural
extension of its relationship as a long-standing customer of Workshare's
document comparison product, Professional.
George Kalorkoti, Group Chief Information Officer at Herbert Smith LLP
explains, "Protecting sensitive information is a top priority for all legal
firms, but striking the balance between security and business productivity is
a key challenge. Workshare Protect was particularly attractive to us because
it means that our employees will be able to make informed decisions at the
point at which they are doing their work without disrupting the day-to-day
productivity of our workforce."
Herbert Smith is widely regarded within the legal sector for its
outstanding work and it therefore imperative that it keeps sensitive
information confidential to maintain its reputation. With over 80 million
documents in its document management system and its workforce sending over one
million external emails each moth, an intelligent data loss prevention
solution will be essential to meet this objective."
