Carlyle-ManorCare Facing New Federal Charges for Breaking the Law:
Interrogating, Threatening, Retaliating Against Nursing Home Workers for
Trying to Form a Union

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Labor
Relations Board issued new charges against Carlyle-ManorCare in Easton, Penn.
yesterday. Workers from the Easton facility had filed a series of charges with
the NLRB against ManorCare for interrogating, threatening, retaliating against
workers, and attempting to bribe workers to stifle union activity. "ManorCare
doesn't want to make real improvements. They're trying to buy us off by
offering money or benefits to people so that we will back down. But what we
really need is a voice to stand up for ourselves and our residents. What we
want is to join together and form our union," said Karen Delabar, a Certified
Nurse Assistant.
    Like other Carlyle-ManorCare workers nationwide, caregivers in Easton have
been struggling to form a union for more than a year.
    This isn't the first time that workers have filed Federal charges against
Carlyle-ManorCare. Other charges have been filed against the Easton facility,
and workers at HCR Manor Care-Bethlehem filed a Federal charge with the Labor
Board last week for three separate incidents of illegally threatening and
interrogating workers about union activity. The Board has not yet issued a
complaint on that charge.
    The NLRB decided to combine the complaint yesterday with existing charges
against ManorCare-Easton. Previous charges include that ManorCare interrogated
employees, confiscated union literature, and retaliated against a worker for
pro-union activity.  Now, the Labor Board has added additional charges to the
complaint accusing Manor Care of interrogating and threatening employees and
granting employees benefits to attempt to stifle the workers attempts to form
a union. The combined complaint will be heard Sept. 10 and 11.
    Carlyle-ManorCare workers and SEIU Healthcare members are calling on
ManorCare to give workers a free and fair choice about whether or not to join
a union, and stop its campaign of harassment and intimidation against workers.
