DALLAS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- By instituting a career pathing program
BRAVO! DEVELOPMENT, INC. (BDI) saved over $5.5 million in employee turnover
costs in 2008 alone. BDI, owners of BRAVO! Cucina Italiana, BRIO Tuscan
Grille and BON VIE Bistro, operates 72 restaurants in over 20 states. With
the help of BATRUS HOLLWEG INTERNATIONAL (BHI), BDI instituted a competency
based talent management and career pathing program which dramatically reduced
turnover in both hourly and management employees.
The International Quality & Productivity Center (IQPC) recently held a
conference on career pathing focused on engaging and retaining your workforce
through career planning and development programs. Scott McTague, M.S., Senior
VP, Talent Solution at Batrus Hollweg and Jeff Ramm, VP, HR at BDI spoke about
career pathing as a crucial tool for retention and productivity. McTague
explained the methodology behind career pathing and Ramm described how career
pathing has improved employee engagement, productivity and retention at BDI.
Identifying the core competencies necessary to be successful is at the
heart of building a career ladder from entry level to management. Batrus
Hollweg worked with BDI to develop custom competency models for hourly and
management positions. Competency models clarify and put the focus on the
truly important behaviors that lead to successful organizational performance.
By using these competencies BDI was able to hire people with the capacity to
do the job and the potential for advancement.
Batrus Hollweg maps the progression of competencies across key levels in
the organization to identify the competency behaviors, training gaps and
developmental needs. This competency map serves as a guide to evaluate current
effectiveness and a predictive measure for success at the next level. By
defining what good performance looks like at every level, the map enables
employees to prepare and develop skills needed for the future... and as a
result, employees are more engaged and organizational performance is
accelerated.
A few years back BDI's hourly turnover was at 125% and rising, costing
them and average of $1,500 per individual. Management turnover was at 32% and
rising costing BDI an average of $30,000 per individual. By instituting a
competency based talent management and career path program BDI was able to
save an estimated $3,510,000 on hourly and an estimated $2,160,000 on
management in turnover costs in 2008.
