DUSHANBE Aug 27 (Reuters) - Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday backed Russia's right to host the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi in the face of international pressure over recent events in Georgia.

"We want to assure (Russia) that China will firmly support holding the Winter Olympic games in Sochi," Hu told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at their meeting in the Tajik capital ahead of the summit of their regional grouping.

Rejecting Russia's right to host the Olympics has been listed by some Western politicians as possible punishment for Russia's recognition of two Georgian separatist regions. (Reporting by Denis Dyomkin, writing by Oleg Shchedrov)
