What:   The 23rd Annual Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching
         will be presented to 10 outstanding Chicago-area teachers of
         grades 4 through 8 at a black-tie gala attended by 800 civic
         leaders, educators and benefactors.

Where:  Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Dr., Chicago

When:   Saturday, Sept. 6 -- 5 pm, reception; 6:30 pm. awards ceremony
         and TV taping by WTTW/11;
        8 pm - 11:30 pm, dinner and dancing

Who:    The 10 winners were selected from 803 teachers from Cook,
         DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will counties who were nominated for
         the award, which was first presented in 1986. Thirty-one
         finalists were named in March.

   Each of the 10 Golden Apple Award winners will receive a
tuition-free fall-term sabbatical at Northwestern University; a
personal computer; $3,000; and induction into the Golden Apple Academy
of Educators, which now has installed 230 expert teachers who work
together to ensure that all children have the excellent teachers they
deserve.
