Failure to Report Information to PennDOT Results in Three-Month Registration
Suspension

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Motorists who switch
insurance providers are reminded that they must contact PennDOT with the
updated information to avoid suspension of their vehicles' registration due to
a lapse in coverage.
"Under state law, all vehicle owners must maintain liability insurance
coverage," PennDOT Deputy Secretary for Safety Administration Kurt Myers said.
"Maintaining vehicle liability insurance is essential as it covers property
damage and injuries to others during a crash."
Vehicle owners, not insurance companies, are responsible for reporting new
policies to PennDOT. When PennDOT receives notification from an insurance
company that an individual's insurance has been cancelled, a letter is sent to
the individual requesting verification that the new insurance policy is in
place. By law, if an individual does not respond to the letter asking for
current insurance information, PennDOT is required to administer a three-month
vehicle registration suspension.
If a suspension occurs, the owner will be required to provide current
proof of insurance to the department and pay a $50 fee to have the vehicle's
registration restored.
"We urge our customers to provide updated insurance information to
PennDOT, when requested, to avoid any penalties," Myers said.
