DC Area Non-Profit Media Organizations Awarded $2.0 Million in Challenge Grants

CHEVY CHASE, Md., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Carolyn and Jeffrey Leonard of Chevy Chase, announced today the award of two $1.0 million challenge grants to Washington, D.C.-based independent media organizations -- The Washington Monthly and WPFW Radio. The grants are intended to assist both organizations to continue and expand their existing program operations as independent, progressive media outlets. In announcing the gift, the Leonards noted that: "Both WPFW and The Washington Monthly are home-grown local institutions that provide unique and independent media content. We wanted to take a significant step to protect their legacy as voices of diverse and poignant viewpoints on culture, policy and community." These latest grants from the Leonards are in addition to four $1.150 million challenge grants awarded in late 2007 to assist metropolitan Washington area organizations to develop further their programs serving low income and diverse communities. The challenge grants have assisted each of these grow their endowments, with the operating income earmarked for the designated programs for the benefit of low-income and diverse communities. The four previous recipient institutions are: Beacon House, a youth educational organization located in the Edgewood Terrace area of NE Washington; City Year- Washington program, a youth service program with programs throughout the District; Round House Theatre, Bethesda, specifically to support programs for low-income and youth populations; and Strathmore, Bethesda, in support of special programs to promote diversity and greater outreach to low-income communities. Jeff and Carolyn Leonard are both life-long residents of the metropolitan area. Carolyn has worked as a Psychologist for the Head Start program of Montgomery County Schools since 1983. Jeff is co-founder and CEO of Global Environment Fund, (GEF) a private equity investment firm founded in 1990 that focuses exclusively on investments in energy and environment related technologies worldwide. Jeff and Carolyn have worked with and supported each of the recipient organizations for many years. Their charitable contributions are targeted on ensuring the legacies of long-time Washington area organizations that enrich the diversity and vibrancy of the local DC community.
