New National Survey Shows Continued Decline in Youth Substance Abuse
Current illicit drug use among teens is continuing to decline, according
to a new report by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration. The study also shows positive signs that teens are seeing the
dangers of abusing prescription drugs and methamphetamine and are pushing
back. Among youth ages 12-17, the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health,
the Nation's largest substance use survey, shows that the significant decline
in overall past month illicit drug use that began in 2002 continued through
2007, from 11-point-6 percent to 9-point-5 percent.

Focus on MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) supporters have convened in Dallas to
kick off their annual national conference at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. The
focus is MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, which focuses on
techniques and technologies that can eliminate drunk driving. Texas leads the
nation in drunk driving and Dallas County is among the top five worst for
drunk driving fatalities based on population. Last year nearly 13-thousand
people were killed in drunk driving crashes across the country, and despite
this, Texas leaders still have not passed sobriety checkpoints and interlocks
for all convicted offenders. In 2007, 1292 people were killed by drunk drivers
with a BAC over .08 in Texas.
