According to Gartner, the email security market is "defined by vendors
that provide enterprise protection against inbound e-mail threats, and
fulfill outbound policy requirements at the SMTP gateway. The e-mail
security market is estimated at $1.2 billion in 2007, growing at 30%. The
strongest demand is for the appliance and SaaS delivery models. Gartner
expects SaaS to represent 30% of the e-mail security market by year-end

Gartner also notes that, "The e-mail security market is one of the few
security markets where all three delivery models (software, appliance, and
SaaS or managed services) are available. Appliances and SaaS models are
seeing the fastest growth, with more than 30% annual growth for many
companies selling e-mail security appliances or services. Some companies
are exploring, by accident or design, hybrid options, whereby a SaaS
service is used to clean unwanted inbound e-mail for spam and viruses, and
an on-premises solution is used for outbound content filtering and custom
requirements. An emerging delivery model is the virtual appliance, which
is especially attractive in the e-mail security world, because spam
volumes and campaigns necessitate increased hardware investments."

    Proofpoint Email Security Solutions

Proofpoint provides a variety of email security solutions that help
enterprises, universities, government organizations and ISPs improve the
overall security, compliance and effectiveness of email. Proofpoint
solutions defend against inbound spam and viruses, prevent leaks of
confidential or private data, encrypt sensitive information, archive email
and improve the manageability of messaging systems -- all on a single,
unified platform. Proofpoint offers customers the most flexible array of
deployment options including on-demand/Software-as-a-Service, on-premises
appliances (hardware or virtual) and software. Proofpoint also makes it
easy to deploy solutions in a hybrid model that combines both on-premises
and hosted features.

In addition to the anti-spam, anti-virus, connection management, email
encryption and data loss prevention solutions for which Proofpoint is well
known, the company has also recently introduced new solutions for email
archiving and improving the usability of enterprise email systems:

-- Proofpoint Email Archiving(TM) is an on-demand email archiving
solution that addresses three key challenges -- email storage management,
legal discovery and regulatory compliance -- without the headaches of
managing an email archive in-house. As a Software as a Service (SaaS)
solution, it can be deployed very quickly, with minimal upfront costs and
planning. Because Proofpoint takes care of everything from storage to
security issues, the archive can be easily managed by existing messaging IT
staff. Proofpoint Email Archiving can be used by any enterprise that uses
    the Microsoft Exchange email server.

-- Proofpoint Secure File Transfer(TM) lets end users send large files
(or files that require enhanced security) quickly and easily -- while
minimizing the impact of large attachments on an organization's email
infrastructure. Ideal for organizations in the healthcare, financial
services, government and other sectors that need to send large files in an
ad-hoc and secure manner, Proofpoint Secure File Transfer ensures minimum
impact on senders, recipients, and IT.
