Calls on Voters to Focus on the Few Races That Will Make a
Difference to Business
SEATTLE--(Business Wire)--
Predicting a 78% incumbent landslide in the 2008 state legislative
races, Enterprise Washington is calling on the private sector to get
involved in voting for legislators that are good for business in this
state.
"Regardless of who is in the Governor's mansion or the White
House, the state legislature has more impact on our individual
prosperity than any of those more high-profile races," said Erin
McCallum, President of Enterprise Washington. "As voters with jobs in
this state, we absolutely have to become more informed on the issues
and candidates that affect our lives and our jobs if we are going to
have a healthier, business-friendly economy in Washington State."
Encouraging private sector involvement in the political process,
Enterprise Washington has been analyzing this year's legislative
races. And out of the 90 races where predictions can be made, it is
likely that 89 incumbent legislators will win back their seats for
another term, signaling the urgent need for voters to get informed and
cast business-friendly votes that reflect their desire for change in
the 2008 elections.
"Regardless of your political persuasion, it is important to know
that Washington's private sector provides the oxygen for all sectors
of our economy; our state government, its employees and our world
class non-profit sector. Profits from Washington's private businesses
fuel these entities in their entirety and create the job market that
sustains us all."
McCallum added that there is good news: "The field of competitive
state legislative races is narrowed to 34. This gives us, as voters,
an incredible opportunity to really engage in understanding which
candidates will do the most for our business community and ultimately
our lives and jobs in Washington State.
"The voters themselves are telling us they don't like how
Washington State is doing business," McCallum said. "So we have an
opportunity to begin to make some encouraging change by paying
attention to the remaining 22% of the races we can do something about.
Change can happen this November, one race at a time. But it will only
happen if voters take the time to educate themselves and cast an
informed vote, not a vote across party lines."
