LONDON, Sept 19 | Fri Sep 19, 2008 4:52am EDT

LONDON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - The world's largest bullion-backed exchange-traded fund, New York's SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), said its gold holdings increased by 4.6 tonnes or around half a percent on Sept. 18.

The trust, which issues securities backed by gold, now holds 655.1 tonnes of bullion.

Its holdings have risen nearly 7 percent since Lehman Brothers' banktuptcy protection filing on Monday precipitated a flight to "safe haven" assets among investors.
