Loma Linda University Medical Center Now Offers Patients the Aurora(R) Dedicated Breast MRI System LOMA LINDA, Calif.--(Business Wire)-- Aurora Imaging Technology Inc. today announced that the Aurora(R) 1.5Tesla Dedicated Breast MRI System has been installed and now is available to patients of Loma Linda University Medical Center. As the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared dedicated breast MRI system specifically designed for 3-D bilateral breast imaging, the Aurora Breast MRI is built to cater to women's anatomy and is more sensitive to their unique needs for optimum imaging and patient comfort. The Aurora Breast MRI is housed within the Breast Health Center of the Loma Linda University Cancer Center (LLUCC), which has been providing cancer-related services and programs since 1991. LLUCC's comprehensive, interdisciplinary and patient-focused approach includes offering the latest advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of breast disease for its patients. "We sought a state-of-the-art modality that would help our female patients feel more comfortable and, based on patient feedback, the Aurora Breast MRI was the machine that met both our needs as well as our patients," said Won Bae, M.D., chief of breast imaging, Outpatient Radiology, Loma Linda University Medical Center. "Patients are very happy with the Aurora Breast MRI and the contoured table and feet-first entry tremendously helps to lessen feelings of claustrophobia." The increased patient comfort available on the Aurora Breast MRI also minimizes the risk of patient movement and thus, motion artifacts are reduced. Additionally, the Aurora Breast MRI alleviates some of the anxiety felt by our patients because of its significantly lower scan time than other MRIs. "The Aurora Breast MRI is highly beneficial for women with dense breasts or for those with breast augmentation because it allows us to see abnormalities without the distraction of fat tissue," continued Dr. Bae. "Furthermore, with the Aurora Breast MRI, we can accurately measure the volume and surface of tumors in women who are being treated by chemo or radiation therapy. This is the best advantage for patients already diagnosed with breast disease because it allows us to follow the progression of treatment and track the shrinkage of a tumor." While efforts to improve cancer screening have lowered the rate of breast disease incidence in Calif., according to the California Cancer Registry (CCR), breast cancer is still one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the state. The CCR reports that there are currently 276,400 female cases of breast disease in Calif., and it estimates another 21,030 female cases will be diagnosed in 2008. The installation of the Aurora Breast MRI at LLUCC marks the third system available to Californians, and supports the most recent breast cancer screening guidelines from the American Cancer Society (ACS), recommending breast MRI for women who are at high risk of breast cancer. "A primary consideration when designing the Aurora Breast MRI was to deliver increased patient comfort and a more efficient medical practice for breast health centers," said Olivia Ho Cheng, president and chief executive officer, Aurora Imaging Technology. "We are proud that Loma Linda University Medical Center understands the importance of this advanced modality and that the Aurora Breast MRI is playing an integral part in the fight against breast disease, while also keeping patient comfort in mind."
