deCarta Mobile API streamlines development of location-enabled applications

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- deCarta devCON'08 -- deCarta, the
leading supplier of software and services for the Location-Based Services
(LBS) industry, today launched an application programming interface (API) for
deCarta Mobile(TM) that supports rapid development of location-enabled
applications for the iPhone(TM). The new API complements the J2ME version of
deCarta Mobile previously announced in September 2008. deCarta Mobile is a
location software platform designed to allow application developers to
simplify the integration of sophisticated, scalable location capability on
mobile devices.
According to a recent forecast released by market analysis firm ABI
Research, mobile LBS will generate annual global revenues of $13.3 billion by
2013, up from $515 million in 2007. The iPhone from Apple(R) has become a
favorite platform for location-enabled applications due to its usability, GPS
and Wi-Fi-based location technologies and support for third-party applications
through the Apple App Store. Recent surveys on the iPhone show that over
300 location-enabled applications have already been developed covering a wide
range of applications including mapping, local search, social networking and
many others.
"We've had a tremendous response to deCarta Mobile, demonstrating the
strong interest in location-enabled applications," said J. Kim Fennell,
President and CEO of deCarta. "By extending deCarta Mobile to iPhone
application developers, deCarta is making it easier for that community to
combine market-leading mapping technology with some of today's most innovative
mobile applications."
deCarta Mobile is a client/server architecture with an easy-to-use client
API that provides a framework for rapid development of mobile mapping
applications. The framework provides mobile application developers with the
ability to easily implement modular fluid maps, panning, zooming, routing,
geocoding, reverse geocoding and pin overlays into their applications.
deCarta Mobile Server(TM) leverages the performance of the company's
geospatial software platform, Drill Down Server(R) which has been proven in
use as the most scalable location platform on the market. deCarta Mobile
Server can be deployed at a customer's facility or accessed as a hosted
service from deCarta. deCarta Mobile Client(TM) is a comprehensive API that
supports the functionality needed for most location-enabled applications used
for mobile search, routing and mobile tracking. deCarta Mobile for the iPhone
provides full support for the iPhone's interactive touch screen for zooming
and panning.
Similar to the company's previously announced J2ME API, the deCarta Mobile
iPhone API is available with complete source code and sample application code
to allow rapid development and customization by application developers.
Customers can modify the application to reflect their own branding needs or
use a map interface that has been optimized by deCarta for the mobile
environment. In addition, deCarta Mobile is compatible with GPS positioning
as well as Wi-Fi- and cell tower-based location technologies.
Beta versions of deCarta Mobile will be available on the company's devZone
or from http://mobile.decarta.com on October 31, 2008. The company will also
be demonstrating deCarta Mobile at their annual developer conference, deCarta
devCON, at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco, October 22-24.
