OTTAWA, ONTARIO, Oct 23 (MARKET WIRE) --
Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame announced today the inaugural
winners of its "Future Telecom Leaders Contest". Mr. Fahri Karakas, a PhD
student at McGill, and Mr. Tyler Funk, a second-year film student at the
University of British Columbia will each receive the Hall of Fame's 2008
scholarship worth $1,500. A third student, Mr. Tyson Maier, a fourth year
Engineering student at the University of Regina receives an Honourable
Mention and a $500 cash prize.

The winning submissions were selected for their creative responses to the
contest question 'How can Canada become a recognized telecom leader in
the next 10 years?' "Our top three winners all presented fresh ideas,"
says Lorne Abugov, Founder and Director of Canada's Telecommunications
Hall of Fame. "Fahri Karakas focused on ways to stimulate technological
innovation. Tyler Funk proposed the concept of a nation-wide online
community to facilitate connections and collaborations for both content
and technical innovation. Tyson Maier underscored the need for broadband
rollout to support education and continuous learning and recommended a
national warning system program as a catalyst to that roll-out."

The Future Telecom Leaders Contest was publicized through university
newspapers as well as the youth online community of "Taking IT Global"
(www.takingitglobal.org), StudentAwards.com and Scholarshipscanada.com.
Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame received a high volume of email
with questions, interest and applications for the contest.

The two Hall of Fame scholarship winners have received all expense paid
invitations to attend at the 2008 Telecom Laureate Awards gala dinner and
induction ceremonies on October 29th, 2008 at the Canadian Museum of
Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec, where they will receive their
scholarships during the Awards gala from CRTC Chairperson Konrad von
Finckenstein. A program has also been developed for them to meet with
telecom executives and government officials while in Ottawa.

"Our industry Hall of Fame aims to promote Canada's past, present and
future telecom excellence," explains Mr. Abugov. "The Future Telecom
Leaders Contest is an exciting and innovative way to inspire young people
to think about careers in Canadian telecommunications and to aspire to
excellence."
