USC Cancer Center Announces Contribution By Larry and Judy Freeman

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer
Center announced that Judy and Larry Freeman have made a donation of $5
million to the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, Keck School of Medicine
of USC. The gift will designate the Judy and Larry Freeman Cancer Day
Hospital, an outpatient facility currently located on the first floor of the
USC/Norris Cancer Hospital. Larry Freeman is the founder of Freeman Cosmetics
Corporation, which has long been a major supported of USC's Norris Cancer
Center.
Almost two decades ago they established the Freeman Aces Cancer Tennis
Tournament, which has raised over $3 million. The Freemans decided to make
this contribution as it is close to their hearts. The Freemans' son, Mark,
received care there as a young man. At the age of 22, a complaint of shoulder
pain led to a diagnosis of t-cell lymphoma, a cancer that arises from
lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells. Mark was successfully treated with
nine months of chemotherapy.
"I have a son who is alive today in part due to some of the work done here
at USC," Mr. Freeman said. "It is a debt that I can never repay."
In addition, the family endowed the Judy and Larry Freeman Chair in Basic
Science Research., currently held by Amy Shiu Lee, at the Keck School of
Medicine. Mr. Freeman also is involved with the Union Rescue Mission, the
National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, the Skin Cancer
Institute and has served on the advisory board for the USC/Norris Cancer
Hospital since 1991.
With a background in beauty products, Larry Freeman pioneered Freeman
Cosmetics, the first mass merchandise line to incorporate high-quality
ingredients, such as amino acids and proteins, in 1976. After just two years,
the company ventured ahead of the competition and incorporated unique, never-
before-used, botanical ingredients, such as avocado, cucumber, orange, papaya
and oatmeal. Some of the brand names include Feeling Beautiful, Papaya Hair
Care and Sea Kelp Hair Care.
With the addition of Larry's son Mark in 1985 and daughter Jill in 1988,
the Freemans worked side by side to ensure that their brand became a household
name. After the sale of the company in 1997, the Freemans later bought the
company back in 2003.
