Oct 23 (Reuters) - Software maker Phoenix Technologies Ltd's PTEC.O reported a wider fourth-quarter loss, hurt by higher expenses, and it cut its 2009 revenue outlook, sending its shares down as much as 31 percent to a new year-low.

"We were slightly impacted by the weakening economic environment and a shift by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) towards lower cost PC platforms, such as the netbook," Chief Executive Woody Hobbs said.

For the quarter ended Sept 30, the company's net loss widened more than six-fold to $4.6 million, or 16 cents a share. Revenue rose 28 percent. [ID:nWNAB0473]

Total operating expenses rose 55 percent to $20.3 million.

Shares of the company touched their lows of $4.88 in the earlier session, before paring some of their losses to trade down $1.84 at $5.22 Thursday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Aftab Ahmed in Bangalore; Editing by Anil D'Silva;)
