Selanne hat-trick lifts Ducks over Red Wings
LOS ANGELES |
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Teemu Selanne's hat-trick helped the Anaheim Ducks edge out the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in overtime Wednesday, the home side extending their winning streak to five games.
In a matchup of the last two Stanley Cup champions, the Ducks conceded a late goal to send the contest into overtime before Francois Beauchemin condemned Detroit to a first road loss in six games this season with a tally 1:39 into the extra session.
Beauchemin batted the puck out of the air past goalie Chris Osgood for the winner, a play that had to be reviewed for possible high sticking before it was determined to be legal.
"It was instinct," Beauchemin told reporters. "The puck was right there... you don't wait for it to come lower than the crossbar, you just hit it and hope it's good."
Trailing 3-2 in the third period, Selanne completed his 21st career hat-trick to tie the game before Brian Sutherby gave Anaheim its first lead with 7:04 to go in regulation.
The Ducks could not hold on, however, as Henrik Zetterberg beat Jean-Sebastien Giguere with a one-timer on an assist from Daniel Cleary to make it 4-4.
Pavel Datsyuk scored Detroit's first two goals to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at 7:53 in the second period, before Zetterberg extended the lead eight minutes later.
Selanne answered for the Ducks inside the final minute of the second period with a goal that cannoned off the skate of a Detroit defender.
"In tonight's game (the powerplay) was huge for our hockey club and gave us a chance," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "If you give us enough chances, we're going to score some goals."
Center Ryan Getzlaf recorded a career-high five assists for Anaheim, who have won six of their last seven contests after beginning the season 0-4-0.
Detroit, leader of the Western Conference Central Division at 7-1-2, was vying for its sixth straight win.
