FACTBOX: Electoral vote tally in election

(Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday was projected to win at least 349 electoral votes out of a possible 538 to defeat Republican John McCain in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

The 538 members of the Electoral College, not the popular vote, actually elect the president of the United States. Electoral votes are allocated to each state and the District of Columbia.

Following is the latest tally of projected electoral votes for Obama and McCain.

Also shown, sourced to cable television network MSNBC, are the latest voting tallies with the percentage cast for each candidate.
