Canada says not shutting door on aid requests

OTTAWA | Fri Nov 7, 2008 11:52am EST

OTTAWA Nov 7 (Reuters) - Canada is not absolutely closing the door to requests for aid from auto firms and other industries that are being hit by the financial crisis, a senior aide to Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Friday.

But the aide also told reporters that Ottawa would have to examine any requests to see if they were only "Band-Aid solutions" or more long-term measures.

"We're not closing the door absolutely on a number of these questions but I think one has to recognize the fiscal situation we are in as well," the aide said. (Reporting by Randall Palmer, writing by David Ljunggren; editing by Rob Wilson)
