Turkish officer killed in clashes with PKK
TUNCELI, Turkey |
TUNCELI, Turkey (Reuters) - A Turkish army officer was killed and four soldiers were wounded in clashes with Kurdish separatist rebels in eastern Turkey Wednesday, security sources said.
Turkish security forces, backed by helicopters, were fighting the guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the mountainous region of Agri late Wednesday, near the border with Iran, they said.
In a separate clash, one PKK rebel was killed in the city of Sirnak, in the predominantly Kurdish southeast.
Turkey has stepped up military action against the PKK since its guerrillas killed 17 soldiers in a raid in southeast Turkey in October. (Editing by Charles Dick)
