Pound hits record low vs euro, 6 1/2-yr low vs dollar

LONDON | Thu Dec 4, 2008 3:54am EST

LONDON Dec 4 (Reuters) - Sterling fell broadly on Thursday, hitting a record low against the euro and its weakest versus the dollar in 6-1/2 years due to expectations of a big interest rate cut by the Bank of England later in the day. Sterling GBP= fell roughly 1.5 percent to $1.4539, its lowest since mid-2002, while the euro EURGBP= jumped as high as 86.74 pence, its strongest level since the single European currency was launched in 1999.

"Everyone is waiting to see what the (BoE) decision will be later on. It's panic ahead of that," a trader in London.
