UPDATE 1-Lower prices cut Canada's retail sales in October

OTTAWA Dec 18 (Reuters) - Lower prices for gas, cars and other items led to a 0.9 percent cut in the nominal value of Canada's retail sales in October, erasing September's gain, Statistics Canada said on Thursday.

In volume terms, sales held up well, rising by 0.1 percent.

Sales of cars and car parts declined by only 0.04 percent from strong levels in September and helped mitigate the overall fall in sals in October. Sales by used car and parts dealers rose by 1.9 percent while new car dealers fell by 0.9 percent.

The median forecast of analysts surveyed by Reuters was for a 1.0 percent fall in overall sales and a 0.8 percent decrease excluding auto sales. All figures are seasonally adjusted.
