John Lewis posts record sales on 1st clearance day
LONDON Dec 28 (Reuters) - John Lewis [JLP.UL], the employee-owned group viewed as a bellwether of British retailing, said on Sunday the first day of its post-Christmas clearance sale produced record takings at its department stores.
Department store sales on Saturday were up 7 percent on the same day last year at 21.3 million pounds ($31.4 million), led by demand for home technology products and womenswear, it said.
"This is a remarkable result at any time and particularly so in this challenging economic climate," department stores Managing Director Andy Street said in a statement. (Reporting by Mark Potter)
