ServiceNation Celebrates 'A New Era of Service' With Martin Luther King III, Mayor Adrian Fenty, Tobey Maguire, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, and Richard Stengel ServiceNation, a campaign to promote and expand the American tradition of citizen service, is hosting a breakfast, "New Era of Service," to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and highlight the importance of President-elect Obama's vision for service and strong, bipartisan support for service in the Congress. Speakers include Martin Luther King III, Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty, Tobey Maguire, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Moore and Kutcher will premiere the "Presidential Pledge," a Web-based video message from entertainment luminaries pledging service commitments. Richard Stengel, Managing Editor of TIME, will also moderate a discussion on service in America. Monday, January 19, 2009 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. Ballou Senior High School 3401, 4th Street, SE, Washington, D.C. (1.7 miles from the Anacostia Metro Station on the Green Line, free shuttle bus available to venue) ServiceNation is working with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and AARP, with key support from Target to host this event honoring the great legacy and service of Dr. King. It will shine a spotlight on service and volunteering at a time when the entire country is watching. At the conclusion of the breakfast, the guests are invited to participate in a service project with coalition partners at Simon Elementary School (401 Mississippi Avenue, SE), just blocks from Ballou Senior High School. Volunteers will work on beautification projects ranging from painting classrooms and murals to transforming the library. The ServiceNation campaign aims to enhance the American tradition of citizen service. Service leaders, elected officials, private sector leaders, and high-profile advocates from entertainment and across sectors will be in attendance. Panelists and speakers will focus on the recent advances in national policy and discuss the potential cultural and financial impact of President-elect Obama's service plan, as well as pending legislation in the House and Senate, including the Serve America Act, and the GIVE Act, which will expand and improve opportunities for service. The goal is to demonstrate broad based support for a new commitment to service as proposed by President-elect Obama and a bi-partisan group of key congressional leaders.
