Former Marine named nation's top military veteran entrepreneur PITTSBURGH, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Veteran-Owned Business Association (NaVOBA) announced that Marine Corps veteran Mark Llano has been selected as its 2009 Vetrepreneur(R) of the Year (VOY), sponsored by Microsoft Corp. Llano, 40, is the founder and CEO of Source One Distributors, a $43 million firm based out of Wellington, Fla. The former investment banker epitomizes the qualities that military training teaches; traits that are also essential to success in business. "I'm humbled and honored by this award," Llano said. "My military training has been so instrumental in shaping my business success." "Mark Llano is a passionate, team-oriented leader with a superhuman work ethic and an inability to accept failure," NaVOBA President Chris Hale said. "Most people who haven't served have never been pushed to their limits. But military training pushes people to failure and beyond, so troops know the full potential of the human body and mind. This knowledge comes in handy when faced with the constant challenge of running a business." Llano is featured on the cover of the January issue of Vetrepreneur magazine now available in print and online at www.navoba.com/voy2009. The Vetrepreneur(R) of the Year nominees are submitted by NaVOBA members and a panel of business experts selects the winner. Veteran-owned businesses, or vetrepreneurs(R) enjoy high priority in government contracting preference and most of corporate America includes them as a specific group in supplier diversity goals. "Microsoft is committed to honoring the leadership, duty, and discipline that veterans like Mark Llano exemplify," said Curt Kolcun, Vice President for U.S. Public Sector at Microsoft, sponsor of the VOY. "In order to honor their sacrifices, we will remain committed to our veterans in tangible ways, from developing IT training academies to building a strong, veteran-owned supplier base." Source One's customers include Office Depot, Wackenhut, BAE Systems, L3 Communications and the federal government. Llano was previously a finalist for Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year and was selected as the Top Hispanic American-owned business in 2007. Another former Marine, Sid Taylor, founder and CEO of SET Enterprises, a $186 million metals processor, was selected as one of two runners-up. Dan Frank, a former Navy carrier pilot and founder and CEO of Three Wire Systems, was the other runner-up.
