CHICAGO--(Business Wire)--
Professor Nadey S. Hakim, a leading British Surgeon, has been unanimously
appointed as The Max Thorek Professor of Surgery, the first surgeon to be
officially designated with this prestigious title in the 74 year history of the
International College of Surgeons, a global entity with active, practicing
members in over 100 countries of the World. This singular honor was officially
bestowed on Professor Hakim on December 4, 2008, at the International College of
Surgeons World Congress in Vienna, Austria, with attendees from over 55
countries.

Two years ago, the global governance of the International College of Surgeons
developed the noble thought that an endowed Chair of Surgery in the name of the
founder of the International College of Surgeons, Dr. Max Thorek, should be
established to foster the memory of Dr. Max Thorek and established to recognize
outstanding surgeons, teachers, and humanitarians in the International College
of Surgeons. A search was initiated and nominations called for, and following
two years of considerations and deliberations, Professor Nadey S. Hakim was
selected for this distinctive honor, an honor to be awarded for exceptional
academic achievements, personal and professional conduct, well beyond the usual,
normal, and customary conduct, to an individual of distinction working on the
frontiers of knowledge.

Professor Nadey S. Hakim has the spirit of Dr. Max Thorek, in that Professor
Hakim is a surgeon of the World, who travels widely, who is an inspiration to
young surgeons who wish to learn and progress in their surgical professions.
Professor Hakim is a humanitarian who involves himself in the significant
debates of the time pertaining to key global issues, such as organ
transplantation and the severe problem of shortage of organs. He has authored
over 18 textbooks and is Editor in Chief of International Surgery.

Professor Nadey S. Hakim is currently Consultant Surgeon and Surgical Director
of the Transplant Unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London. For
