UniCredit CEO has no comment on 2008 targets

MILAN Jan 21 (Reuters) - UniCredit SpA's (CRDI.MI) top executive had no comment on Wednesday about 2008 goals at Italy's number-two bank, which has made two profit warnings since October.

"I really don't have anything to say," Chief Executive Alessandro Profumo told reporters after a meeting of the executive committee of the Association of Italian Banks.

He did not respond to a question about whether he could confirm UniCredit's target of 4 billion euros in 2008 net profit set last month. The bank reports 2008 results on March 17.

Profumo made a U-turn in October by launching a 6.6 billion euro ($8.51 billion) capital boost, including a 3 billion euro rights issue. UniCredit has been the Italian bank most pummelled by the credit crisis since it has the biggest exposure outside the country's conservative lending market.

Another banker attending the meeting, UniCredit Vice Chairman Gianfranco Gutty, declined to comment about newspaper reports he could replace Chairman Dieter Rampl.

The bank's governance committee took first steps to reshuffle the board on Tuesday, including possibly replacing Rampl.

UniCredit shares were up 2.75 percent at 1.384 euros at 1344 GMT, in line with the DJ Stoxx banks index .SX7P. (Reporting by Gianluca Semeraro and Giancarlo Navach, editing by Will Waterman)
