CORRECTED - Bristol-Myers to refile for Erbitux for lung cancer
(Corrects first paragraph to show that Eli Lilly acquired ImClone, not Bristol-Myers)
LOS ANGELES Jan 23 (Reuters) - Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (BMY.N) and ImClone Systems, which last year was acquired by Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N), said on Friday they will withdraw, and eventually resubmit, an application with U.S. regulators to market cancer drug Erbitux as a treatment for lung cancer.
ImClone and Bristol-Myers, which co-market Erbitux, attributed the move to a "chemistry manufacturing and controls" matter involving the comparability of the U.S.-marketed version of Erbitux with the clinical supplies used by Germany's Merck KGaA (MRCG.DE), which sells the drug outside of North America.
The companies said discussions with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not have any impact on currently-marketed Erbitux.
The drug, which is designed to block a protein that is involved in cancer cell growth, is currently approved as a treatment for colon cancer as well as head and neck cancer. (Reporting by Deena Beasley; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)
