New Rapid Transit Line Will Link the Miami Metrorail and Miami International
Airport, Providing Improved Public Transportation to Airport for Travelers and
Workers
MIAMI--(Business Wire)--
The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners has awarded a joint venture led by
construction firm Odebrecht a $360 million contract to complete the first phase
of Miami Metrorail`s three-phase Orange Line expansion. The 2.4 mile-long
Airport Connection, planned for completion within three years, will connect the
Miami Intermodal Center at Miami International Airport to Metrorail`s Earlington
Heights station, linking the airport to the existing rapid transit network. The
Board of County Commissioners approved the contract with a unanimous 11-0 vote.

The joint venture selected to build Phase I, Odebrecht-Tower Community Joint
Venture, is led by Odebrecht (50%), in conjunction with The Tower Group (25%)
and Community Asphalt (25%), both of which are controlled by Spain`s OHL
construction group. Under terms of the contract, 25% of construction work on the
project must be carried out by the joint venture itself, with another 12%
carried out by Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) consisting mainly of
small and minority-owned businesses. The project is expected to benefit
approximately 30 companies and employ some 300 workers from throughout the
Miami-Dade community.

"We are very pleased to participate in what we hope will be the beginning of
several steps to improve public transportation across Miami-Dade County," says
Gilberto Neves, CEO of Odebrecht in the US and principal for the joint venture.
"Linking Miami International Airport to the Metrorail system is a project that
has been on the drawing board for some time and Odebrecht, along with our joint
venture partners, is ready to make this important connection a reality."

The Airport Connection will provide rapid access to the airport from Downtown
Miami, Dadeland and Hialeah, reducing travel time and cost for airport workers,
tourists, shoppers and University of Miami students, among others. The project
also helps to reduce greenhouse emissions by expanding the city`s public
transportation network. The Metrorail system already reports 18 million annual
boardings, which are set to increase as the system continues to expand.

The contract also includes construction of three substations, a passenger
station, a bus station, and the upgrade or construction of several connecting
roadways. Odebrecht is set to break ground in the coming weeks on the MIA Mover,
an Automated People Mover connecting Miami International Airport with the Miami
Intermodal Center, completing the link to the Airport Connection. The contract
for the 1.27-mile MIA Mover, also being built under a joint venture, includes
the full turnkey design, engineering and construction.

Odebrecht has contributed to improving and expanding Miami-Dade County`s road
and railway infrastructure, having built the Golden Glades Interchange, sections
of the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826), and the Brickell Loop of the
Downtown Metromover, among other projects. It is currently expanding Miami
International Airport through another joint venture.
