Senate Republicans want stimulus bill cut: McConnell

WASHINGTON | Mon Feb 2, 2009 11:35am EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Monday most of his Republican members believe the nearly $900 billion economic stimulus bill before the Senate can be cut.

With the Democratic-led Senate set to begin debate on the legislation later in the day, McConnell said there also appears to be considerable Senate Democratic "unrest" with the package of tax cuts and spending proposals.

Members of both political parties have complained that some of the proposed spending would not stimulate the economy and should be eliminated. The Democratic-led House of Representatives passed its version of the stimulus measure last week without any Republican support.
