French officer, Afghan translator killed in ambush
PARIS |
PARIS (Reuters) - A French officer and an Afghan interpreter were killed in an ambush south of Kabul on Wednesday, an army official said, bringing France's death toll in Afghanistan to 26.
Another French soldier was seriously wounded in the double ambush, in which French and Afghan soldiers were hit by a mine explosion and were then attacked by insurgents, armed forces spokesman Christophe Prazuck said.
He could not give any details about the attackers.
The French unit was on patrol together with Afghan soldiers in Logar province, south of Kabul. France is one of the top contributors to foreign forces fighting the Taliban, after the United States, Britain and Germany.
More than a thousand foreign soldiers have died in Afghanistan since the beginning of the mission in 2001.
