COLOMBO (Reuters) -- An explosion struck an area close to the Sri Lankan capital's port after anti-aircraft batteries opened fire to repulse an apparent Tamil Tiger rebel air raid, the military said.

"Something exploded in Fort. It's not clear whether it was the aircraft being shot down or a dropped bomb," defense spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said, referring to a part of Colombo near the port. The blast came during a hail of anti-aircraft fire that was visible over central Colombo.
