Senate passes $410 billion 2009 spending bill
WASHINGTON |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate on Tuesday approved a $410 billion bill to fund government operations through September 30, despite Republican attempts to trim it down amid concerns about more spending.
The Senate approved the bill by voice vote after the Obama administration offered assurances that language in it to ease stiff limits on trade and travel with Cuba did not amount to a major reversal of the decades-old U.S. policy of isolating the communist-run island.
Identical legislation passed the House of Representatives last week, and it now goes to President Barack Obama for his expected signature.
