WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will convene a meeting of top U.S. financial regulators on Thursday morning, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that the President's Working Group on Financial Markets, which includes the heads of the Federal Reserve, Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, would meet at the Treasury Department. It did not say what the officials would discuss.

Geithner is nailing down a plan to use government capital and financing as an incentive for private investors to help take distressed assets off the balance sheet of banks.

A senior Treasury official said on Saturday he would offer more details on this plan this week, although a Treasury official said on Wednesday an announcement might not be made until next week.

In addition, Geithner has said he will unveil within the next week a framework for financial regulatory reform. He will testify on regulatory reform on March 26, and the topic is expected to be in the forefront of a meeting of leaders from the Group of 20 rich and developing nations on April 2.
