Kelvin Pichardo gets 50-game ban after positive test
NEW YORK |
NEW YORK (Reuters) - San Francisco Giants pitcher Kelvin Pichardo was suspended for 50 games on Monday after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance.
The 23-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic violated Major League Baseball's drug prevention and treatment program, the baseball commissioner's office said in a statement.
Pichardo has not yet competed in the major leagues and is playing for Triple-A Fresno.
His suspension will begin at the start of the 2009 regular season.
