He is also the youngest son of architect Richard Neutra and the brother of architect Dion Neutra. He has been working with Cal Poly Pomona University to restore the Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio/Residences in the Silver Lake District of Los Angeles and to find the funding to establish a vibrant program there. Sarah Lorenzen, AIA, is an architect and an assistant professor in the Architecture Department at Cal Poly Pomona where she teaches courses in architecture, urban design and film. Professor Lorenzen is also the resident director of the Neutra VDL House, and she is a principal at multimedia design firm Plasmatic Concepts. Background Preservation and Program at the Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio/Residences 1932, 1940, 1966 Architect Richard Neutra envisioned a live workspace for three households on a tiny lot in the Silver Lake District of Los Angeles. Built in three phases, the last one with his son and partner Dion Neutra, the experimental structure addressed eternal design questions: how to address privacy and communality, climate sensitive design, invite the outdoors and nature in an urban setting. Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design in cooperation with the Friends of the Neutra VDL Research Site have a campaign with the goal to restore, maintain, inform and serve. (see www.neutra-vdl.org) The 2009 California Preservation Foundation Annual Conference will also focus on sustainability and feature exclusive tours which will highlight Palm Springs' mid-century modern architecture and its many popular sights. In addition, several special events will be held in the area's most historic and architecturally significant venues.
