TAINAN, Taiwan--(Business Wire)--
A dialogue between Dr. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, the French Nobel Prize Laureate
in Physics 1997 and Dr. Yuan Tseh Lee, the Taiwanese Nobel Prize Laureate in
Chemistry 1986 took place at Cheng Hsing Hall of College of Medicine, National
Cheng Kung University (NCKU), attracting a crowd of audience from NCKU students,
faculties and senior high school students. This stimulated dialogue was entitled
"Quantum Physics and its Impact on Daily Life," with an opening remark by NCKU
President, Academician Michael Ming Chiao Lai.

President Lai said listening to the masters` speech can inspire students. He
took himself as an example and said that influenced a speech by a molecular
biologist when he was a student in College of Medicine, he committed himself as
a virologist. President Lai expected this special dialogue between two
well-known Nobel Prize Laureates can have similar impact to young students and
researchers. "Scientific research requires curiosity and creativity, whose
essence is to ask questions, to find the problems and to figure out the
solutions," said President Lai.

Being new to Taiwan, Dr. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji showed a feeling of excitement.
During the lecture, entitled" Quantum Physics and its Impact on Daily Life," Dr.
Cohen-Tannoudji introduced in a simple way a few basic concepts of quantum
physics. He also showed how advances of fundamental research in this domain can
open the way to a wealth of applications which transform our daily life.
Moreover, he also made brief introduction on various applications like optical
pumping, magnetic resonance imaging, ultra-precise atomic clocks, atomic
interferometers, Bose Einstein condensates.

Dr. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji claimed that over the last decades human being`s
capability to control and manipulate the quantum system, such as atom, molecule,
ion and electron has been greatly enhanced so that researchers can stretch into
new research fields, investigate innovative questions, and explore new systems
and substance condition. "It is expected that these new discoveries will lead to
more understanding of the universe and interesting application," said Dr. Claude
Cohen-Tannoudji. "Fundamental research, especially on physics can not only
render human beings aware of the existence of the universe, but also provide
resolution on resource, environment, and health. Still, research on physics can
improve science education and make human beings more tolerant of each other,
broad-minded to new concepts because the essence of science is to have humble
and open-minded.

Dr. Yuan Tseh Lee made his mind to become a chemist and devoted himself to
absorb a lot of related knowledge, such as quantum mechanics, physical
electronics, thermostatics, German, Japanese, French, even Russian language. He
encouraged young students to acquire latest knowledge, to ask questions and keep
curious. "Studying in the university is just an initial step; however, research
can not be mature until masters or doctoral education. Persistence of studying
will lead to achievement," added Dr. Lee.

When responding to students` question, Dr. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji believed that
perseverance and patience, which can be cultivated in good laboratory, are the
keys to advanced research and resolution to overcome the difficulties in the
scientific career. Like learning playing piano, sophisticated skills comes from
long-term training. The secret of doing research is to be a student, to learn
news things, which can motivate life although it is hard-working. Doing research
also acquires discussion and exchanging opinion with others, so that the concept
and methods can be modified. Dr. Cohen-Tannoudji also claimed that
inter-disciplinary education is necessary to the research.
