Rob Heckethorn frequently walked away from snack vending machines in his rural
west Tennessee home town rather than put money into them for junk foods. And
like many of us, he found himself wondering just why the local vending machines
never seemed to offer anything other than 1950s-era snacks featuring empty
calories, fats and salt -- despite decades of news stories about proper
nutrition.

So when he recently left his twenty year job with an auto parts manufacturer,
Heckethorn decided to look into health food vending and whether it might provide
him with a satisfying and rewarding transition career.

Since then he's never really looked back.

As his mountain region's newest distributor for YoNaturals Corporation of San

the art vending machines he's placed in area health clubs. And he's looking
forward to maybe adding the district's schools to his domain, too -- an idea

"We're a pretty insular location," says Heckethorn. "And many of the labels on
health conscious snack products are unfamiliar to us. Heck, so is the very
concept! But we like tasty treats -- and if they offer healthier ingredients
than the old vended junk foods, then I say why not?"

General manager Kate Thompson at Rainbow Gymnastics, a popular spot for area
kids, agrees with Heckethorn. She's watched young people approach the
stylish-looking machines and ponder the unfamiliar looking labels on display. "I
had to actually offer free bites of the organic offerings to get them to see
that healthy snacks can also taste good. Since then, healthy vending has really
taken off here."

And at nearby Ultimate Fitness Gym, manager Miranda Kemp says workout regulars
are happy to finally have something to nosh on that won't negate the effects of
exercising -- even if some of the labels look more California than Smoky
Mountains.

Where to from here for Heckethorn? "The marketing folks at YoNaturals in San
Diego have been real helpful with planning and logistics, and seem to have no
end of leads on promising new vending locations. I'm just a bit surprised it's
all been so easy," says Rob Heckethorn.
