READING, MA, Mar 30 (MARKET WIRE) --
InfoMedics, Inc., the patient feedback company, recently presented a
poster detailing patients' experiences with desonide hydrogel for the
treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). Patient-reported
impressions of treatment response were found to provide a valuable
complement to objective clinical observations, assisting physicians in
evaluating new therapies. Over 1,000 patients and 530 healthcare
providers from across the United States participated in the survey.
Overall, patients in this program reported very favorable experiences
after their treatment with desonide hydrogel, including up to 60 percent
reductions in symptom severity. Patients were invited to participate in
the survey, conducted online and via telephone, by their healthcare
providers, 73 percent of whom were dermatologists. Individual patient
responses from pre- and post-treatment surveys were summarized in
one-page reports sent to the patient's prescribing physician.
The poster was prepared by InfoMedics' Senior Director of Analytic
Services Donna Kerney, PhD, in conjunction with Rosanne Ford, BA and
Vincent Gotz, MS Pharm, of SkinMedica, Inc. Kerney presented the poster
at the 67th Annual Meeting of American Academy of Dermatology, March
6-10, 2009, in San Francisco, CA. The research was supported by funding
from SkinMedica, Inc.
"Not only does real-time feedback from their own patients help physicians
to more thoroughly evaluate new therapies, there are demonstrable benefits
to patients as well," said Kerney. "Self-assessment programs allow
patients an opportunity to become more involved in their care and may
help in increasing medication adherence."
The majority (68 percent) of respondents reported having used at least one
medication previously for their AD. Among those patients, satisfaction
with desonide hydrogel was nearly 2X higher on average than satisfaction
with previous medications. Satisfaction with the treatment for all
respondents averaged 7.7 out of 9, with 9 being "very satisfied." The
vast majority (89 percent) of patients reported that they intend to
continue using desonide hydrogel to treat their AD, and 85 percent would
recommend the treatment to others.
