Workshops in 15 cities nationwide teach educators how to investigate science
experiments using 'LabQuest' in and out of the classroom
BEAVERTON, Ore., March 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Vernier Software &
Technology will host 21, hands-on workshops in 15 cities around the U.S.,
giving science and math educators the opportunity to learn techniques for
teaching scientific exploration, both in and out of the classroom. Attendees
will learn how to integrate computers and the Vernier LabQuest handheld
data-collection device into any science or math curriculum. Several workshops
will cover experiments required by the College Board for Advanced Placement
(AP).
During the 6-hour general sessions, Vernier trainers and attendees will
explore the many ways that data-collection technology can be used to enhance
learning in any chemistry, biology, physics, math, middle school science,
physical science or Earth science classroom. Participants will learn how to
collect data using the LabQuest, the most powerful and intuitive interface
ever designed by Vernier. This versatile data collection tool can be used both
in the lab and out in the field, thus enhancing the learning experience with
real-world applications of science. Each workshop includes breakfast, lunch
and a cd containing the experiments. The cost of the workshop is $99.00.
Sessions will be lead by current or former classroom science and math
teachers. Vernier's group of 26 trainers together has 686 years of teaching
experience and has won many prestigious awards. Collectively they have written
more than 60 science books and lab manuals, including many published by
Vernier.
Participants in the Biology/AP Biology workshops will get intense hands-on
instruction and conduct seven experiments recommended for AP Biology students
by the College Board. Additionally, Advanced Biology with Vernier will be
given to each participant.
AP Chemistry Workshops are hosted by the powerhouse chemistry team - Vernier
and Flinn Scientific. Attendees will experience 22 experiments that are
recommended for students by the College Board. The Vernier-Flinn lab book,
Advanced Chemistry with Vernier, which will be provided to each participant,
making it easy to replicate these experiments with students.
Educators attending the physics workshops will explore the use of Vernier
sensors and Logger Pro software in physics teaching. Participants will
perform at least one traditional experiment, inquiry activity, or lab
practical. Each attendee will receive a copy of Physics with Vernier.
Biology/AP Biology Workshops, AP Chemistry Workshops, and Hands-on Physics
Workshops are held over two days, and include breakfast, lunch and a cd
containing the experiments. The cost per workshop is $199. Additional
hardware/software packages may be purchased.
According to David Vernier, co-founder of Vernier and a former physics
teacher, "Science is about exploration. We offer Vernier workshops to give
educators innovative ways to collect and use data for real-world experiments
with students. Our data collection workshops enable science and math teachers
to bring concrete concepts and real-world relevance to instruction."
